Bergamot: What Is It?

Bergamot: What Is It?

Bergamot is one of the most commonly used ingredients in perfumes and, interestingly, has remained a favourite component of fragrance composition since fragrances were invented. Scents that comprise bergamot actually account for over a quarter of our perfumes at http://www.perfumeclearancecentre.com.au – 25% of our fragrances contain bergamot. That’s quite a number!

BUT WHAT EXACTLY IS IT???

Good question. I myself had no idea until I realized I seemed to be typing ‘bergamot’ more often than obvious fragrance additions such as jasmine and rose. Bergamot, pronounced ‘BURGER-MOE’ (sounds like a trendy new American food joint) is actually a CITRUS. Who knew? Not me.

This funky fruit is found most commonly in the southern regions of rural France, and word on the street is that it is a ‘sweet lemon.’ In my mind, that’s code for ‘better lemon.’ Because of the balance it strikes between sweet and sour as well as the strength of its acidity versus its staying power, bergamot is the citrus du jour of summery and wintery fragrances alike. It’s also quite obvious in its scent, which is why it’s most commonly included as a top note in a perfume. LOGIC.

If you’re shopping for a new addition to your fragrance collection at http://www.perfumeclearancecentre.com.au, be sure to check out our product descriptions. Each description contains a list of a fragrance’s top notes, heart notes, and base notes, and if you recognise bergamot as part of a perfume’s top notes, you can be assured that this fragrance is fruity, full-bodied, and dances on the skin.
